Minneapolis is supported by a robust mass transit network, the majority of which was built in the 1970s, along with the BART, MARTA, and WMATA systems.
Line 1 follows West Broadway, Fifth Street, and University Avenue into Saint Paul.
Line 2 follows Hennepin Avenue and France Avenue into Edina.
Line 3 follows Central Avenue, Nicollet Avenue, and Lyndale Avenue into Richfield.
Line 4 follows Washington Avenue, Fifth Street, and Hiawatha Avenue into Bloomington.
Line 9 follows the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis.
Line 1 connects Minneapolis and Saint Paul; lines 1-4 serve Central Minneapolis; lines 1, 5, and 6 serve downtown Saint Paul (for those keeping track, that's 6-5-1); lines 4 and 5 serve MSP Airport. [Line 7 is planned to go down Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul; Line 8 down Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis.]
Amtrak serves the area with two services, each stopping at both Minneapolis Great Northern Station and Saint Paul Union Depot. Empire Builder, two trains daily in each direction, runs from Chicago to Portland/Seattle, with stops in Winona, Saint Cloud, Detroit Lakes, and Fargo, ND. Borealis, four trains daily in each direction, also runs from Chicago via Milwaukee.
Northstar is state-run regional rail with three services based out of Great Northern Station in Minneapolis. Line X is a heavy rail express train running between Minneapolis and Saint Paul Union Depot with 15 daily trips in each direction. Line Y heads to Saint Cloud with 9 daily trips each way; select trains continue to either Brainerd or Fergus Falls. Line Z travels to Duluth – the Zenith City – with 5 daily trips each way.
